ABOUT ACADEMY FILMS

Academy Films is a video production company. They specialise in the production, editing and distribution of films as well as everything else in between. We wanted to give them a brand identity that would reflect their ambitions of becoming world-class film producers while looking good on the Internet.


THE CONCEPT

There are many ways to go about translating film to branding. We tried to stay away from the clichés: no film rolls, no clapperboard…Instead we went with a minimalistic aesthetic which tells viewers what they do while feeling native on the Web.

THE CHALLENGE

Since we decided against using “obvious” design queues to communicate the fact that Academy Films is a production firm, we needed to go with subtlety, beauty and simplicity. Our logo and branding design focus (get it?) was the tool that no good film director can do without: the Director’s Viewfinder. Just as the viewfinder helps a director focus on the important parts of a scene so does Academy Films’ logo.

THE FOCUS

The focusing & un-focusing action is also replicated throughout the branding and on the website. The branding also includes subtle references to the framing mechanism of a storyboard. Academy Films now has a beautiful brand identity which truly communicates their core focus without clichés.
